Case Study: Reuse Systems
Furniture, Stationery and Small Assets

Bel has designed and implemented rescue and reuse solutions for business and government, and is a dedicated advocate for keeping items in use.

She understands the common challenges; storage, logistics, labour costs, the economics of general waste services vs rescue collection, end markets and resourcing to manage it all.

Having recently visited over thirty Australian enterprises involved in the rescue, repair and redistribution of useful items, she understands current solutions, and they may help your organisation.

Furniture and Stationery

After seeing the amount of useful items often binned during staff moves and campus relocations, Bel designed, implemented and personally ran the London School of School of Economics (LSE) Reuse Room.

She secured an on-campus area, where usable items were housed, and LSE staff could visit on Wednesdays, and select anything they wanted, for free.

Bel also oversaw, ‘LSE Skip’ – an internal system of useful items listed by staff in a private Facebook group, which could be swapped.

Small Items

Bel established a partnership with a Charity, to collect and redistribute miscellaneous, but usable items from LSE Departments. From gym equipment to maps from the Geography Department, hundreds of items were rescued annually.

Musical Instruments

At the City of Sydney, Bel worked on Community Drop off Days for E-waste, paint and chemicals; which included reusable Musical Instruments, donated to a local charity.

I thoroughly enjoyed Bel’s ‘Ask Anything’ session at the 2023 Woodford Festival in Queensland; she was amazing!

She enthusiastically fielded a huge variety of questions from the audience on all things circularity - everything from packaging to systems change to reuse options. Bel aced every question with brilliance, humour and facts, speaking with encouragement to those who were new to the subject and with custom resources she had at the ready.

We all learned heaps!
